To sum it up, it's a call-and-response minigame. It's tricky on purpose, but you'll definitely get the hang of it if you keep at it. And make sure that the first foot tap of your response is when the blue/purple circles overlap that's the first beat that you should press the parry button, and if you follow the call's rhythm, your response will be perfect, and you'll complete the minigame successfully. When these minigames do occur, I recommend trying your best to stop tapping your foot to the 4-4 beat that plays normally and simply focus visually on the unique beat of the rhythm pattern that they present, and then sync it to the moment that the blue/purple circles match up - don't follow the natural instinct to perform the parry to the beat of the background music! If you have to tap your foot, then tap it to the rhythm of the call, or the attack's first lightning bolt. It's a rhythm challenge within a rhythm challenge! The patterns can start on an offbeat of the background music, or contain multiple eighth notes that would put the rhythm offbeat - this is an intentional challenge, which is why they show you the visual pattern during the call-and-response.
